Both Azzurro Vanel and Grell Sutcliff have compared him to Romeo.Sebastian is the first demon to appear in Kuroshitsuji and the only one in the manga.Sebastian's name is similar to Father Sebastien Michaelis, who wrote a classification of demons in Hell.He seems to find humans, in general, to be "difficult creatures," but he also states that their struggles and lofty goals make them "interesting." He is also intrigued about how insatiable they are as they are willing to "drag others down to get what they want, even in death". Sebastian often contemplates about the nature of human beings. However, despite all the troubles he goes through on a daily basis, he has said that he doesn't think it's such a bad way of living. Once, he responded to Ciel's kidnapping as "terrible" but only because the tea he prepared would go to waste. At times, Sebastian can be indifferent and deliberately delays Ciel's wellbeing, as he frequently teases him and has put his life in mild danger for his own amusement. It is also shown with his cruel sarcasm and his inability to see good in much of anyone. This comes out when he attacks others on Ciel's orders, such as when he kicked Grell Sutcliff's face because it was the thing that Grell wanted the least damage to. The way he responds to Ciel's demands is quite notable, as the servants are pleased when they can successfully imitate the way he says "Yes, my lord" to Ciel.ĭespite his ability to appear like a perfectly normal human, especially one who is able to smile, be cheerful, and be understanding, Sebastian is, in actuality, quite heartless, sadistic, and malicious. As such, he is noticeably annoyed whenever they end up behind schedule. However, whenever Sebastian sees a cat, he ignores whatever Ciel says to him. He follows each order faithfully, while always ensuring that the Phantomhive house runs smoothly. Sebastian is a dutiful and dedicated butler to Ciel Phantomhive. Details of this form include high-heeled stiletto boots, a shower of black feathers, sharp claws, glowing fuchsia irises, slitted pupils, and longer, sharper teeth. Sebastian's demonic form has never been fully shown. He occasionally removes these, revealing black fingernails. His white gloves conceal the mark of his Faustian Contract with Ciel Phantomhive on his left hand. He also sports a pocket watch with a chain, and a chained silver lapel pin bearing the Phantomhive Crest, traditionally worn by the house's head butler. He typically dresses in an outfit consisting of black trousers, a tailcoat, vest, with the Phantomhive Crest on his shirt cuffs and tie. It’s possible, though, that he has some human emotion – he does seem awfully devoted to Ciel.Sebastian takes on the appearance of a tall, male adult with black hair and red eyes. But make no mistake: underneath the polite exterior, he is still a demon, and perfectly willing (maybe even eager) to kill on command. He’s a lover of beauty, and can even be a little fussy sometimes. Sebastian embodies the soul of gentility. Personality… graceful, accomplished, and practically perfect. And when Ciel accomplishes it, Sebastian will devour his soul. He’s not above using a dazzling smile to get his way, though.Ĭhallenge… helping Ciel achieve his goal of avenging his parents’ murder. Serving his master Ciel doesn’t leave him much time for romantic pursuits. Although nothing can quite compare to the elegance and beauty of cats, which are the only things that can distract Sebastian from his duties. The perfect pairing of tea to cake, the elegance of the correct table setting – these are sources of satisfaction. Interests… accomplishing the skills of a butler with effortless finesse. How, you may ask? Because, as Sebastian says, “I am simply one hell of a butler.” Not that Sebastian can’t do that – he can and does – but he also saves Ciel from kidnappings and near-death situations, throws a mean party, wins a curry competition, stops a train, and does it all with his black coat intact. Of course, when you work for the Queen’s Watchdog (Ciel) and have a supernatural contract with him, that means a lot more than merely welcoming guests and preparing tea. It’s also because of him that the three other servants haven’t managed to burn the place down yet. Sebastian serves as butler to the Earl Ciel Phantomhive, and it’s because of Sebastian that the house and grounds are simply impeccable. Living… in the Phantomhive estate in England. Grew up… who knows? He’s a demon who’s lived for thousands of years.
